The Painted Whale is family-owned and operated right here in Grand Manan, NB. Since our store opened its doors in 2016, we’ve treated every customer like they were a part of our family, sharing information with them about things to do, places to see, artisan studios, places to eat and stories about the history of the island.
The store is operated day-to-day by Andrea Kelter, who also sources the products and works with the artists and makers; while daughter Alex manages the marketing and social media.
The Kelters first began coming to Grand Manan in 1999 in order to spend time watching whales (Andrea's passion), and quickly became annual visitors lengthening their stay each year until they were keeping a trailer at Hole-in-the-Wall from April to October. The dream of a store on the island took shape in 2001, and after fifteen years of research and planning became a much-loved reality in June 2016.
The product selection changes every year and throughout each season to keep each visit to the store fresh and new for island visitors and residents alike.
Maintaining the island's pristine ecosystems is important to the family, and all of the store's packaging is made from 100% recycled craft paper, stamped with the Painted Whale logo using plant-based ink.
Andrea is also involved with the Grand Manan Tourism Association, and heads the Facebook Group Friends of the Fundy Park West Proposal - who are working to add a 100-acre extension to Fundy National Park on the eastern cliffs of the island.
